Yesterday, I found out that a dear college mate died in his efforts to make our world a better place. One of the few mates who preferred calling me Opoku to Spencer. You may have read, seen, or heard about Luke Somers' death.
Luke was well known in Beloit College among international students. He would walk through the downtown of Beloit with international students to the bookstore or grocery store - mostly, to the Salvation Army. He was always there with/for us. His lively and positive vibe for humanity will forever be missed. His innate passion for current affairs was infectious, and I remember a couple of discussions I had with him about democratic changes across the African continent...he even motivated me to start the African Club at Beloit.
Since Luke’s departure...when I see the poor, the weak, the sad, and the misrepresented, I ask myself, "what would Luke do?" I hope I never stop asking....
